Everyone is invited to attend and all are welcome. Free parking.

Remember our Can of the Month project to collect food for donation to MEND (mendpoverty.org), a local and regional food bank (and so much more). On your way out the door for the meeting, and if you are able, please grab a can (or box or package–no glass, please) of food (human or pet) and bring to the Tuesday meeting. Pop-top cans are especially prized.

Another way to help those experiencing food insecurity, and yourself as well, is to bring 20 (unexpired) canned food items to SOS Survival Products between now and November 30. You’ll get 15% off your entire purchase.

GHNNC EP meeting Tuesday, October 15, 2019, 7:00 pm–Learn How To Prepare Your Pets for Disasters and Evacuations

Tanya Yarbrough, of Kazzi Dog Training (kazzidogtraining.com), will share her extensive knowledge and expertise to help prepare pet owners to safely and securely handle their dogs and cats (primarily) during a disaster or when the need to evacuate a threatened area is present. Learn that dogs view their owners as the leader of the pack, and how to use that to your advantage. As for cats, well, Tanya will explain. This information is valuable for us all, as we never know when we’ll be in a situation with frightened animals.

Really great information will be disseminated, so pet owners in particular should not miss this opportunity! Tanya will show you how a well-trained dog and cat can easily be prepared for a quick evacuation.

Annual Valley Disaster Preparedness Fair Was Fantastic!
The largest Disaster Preparedness Fair in Los Angeles was held as planned on Saturday October 12, at the Northridge Fashion Center. Yes, we had N95 masks available. Thank you to all that traveled the “extra mile” to ensure our success in spite of the major brush fires burning around us, the poor air quality, and mandatory evacuations. While attendance was understandably lower, exhibitors reported a more engaged public. Hat’s off to the Sea Cadetswho, with JIT OJT, expertly handled our Registration stations, under the gentle and expert guidance of Michael Hart.

One-Day Ham Radio Class and Exam in Agoura, Sunday, October 20
Last one of this year. Norm (K6YXH) and Naomi (WB6OHW) Goodkin’s next one-day Study & Exam Session for the Technician (entry-level) class will be on Sunday, October 20. If you’d like to attend, get in touch with Norm real soon, as those who prepare ahead of class do better in class. Learning Morse code is no longer required for any ham license, and you can miss up to 9 questions on the 35-question multiple choice Technician exam and still pass. Exams for General and Amateur Extra are also offered in the afternoon (concurrent with the Tech. exam) for just the cost of the exam session ($5).

These one-day courses are conducted quarterly and are designed to get you your amateur radio Technician license as quickly as possible. Those passing the FCC exam typically are licensed within one week (your license info will appear in the FCC database–paper licenses are no long routinely issued; however, you may request a copy from the FCC).

The $75 (cost goes up in 2020!) Study & Exam fee includes instruction (no book to buy), lunch, the exam fee, and two follow-up sessions on the next two Sunday mornings. The first covers “What radio do I need?” and the second covers “How do I use and program my radio?” Exams for Tech (and all other levels) are also offered in the early morning of the two Sundays immediately following each quarterly Study & Exam session. If you are looking to upgrade your ham license, General and Extra Class exams are also offered at the same time (pay only the $5 exam fee). Many ham radio clubs and organizations offer the license exam throughout the Valley and the Greater Los Angeles area as well.

For an additional $35, students may purchase a dual-band hand held transceiver (HT) radio so you can get on the air as soon as your license appears in the FCC database. Having your own radio to use during the two follow-up sessions is especially valuable.

For details and more information, contact Norm at hamclass@goodkin.net, via phone at 818-222-7893, or online at hamclass.goodkin.net.
