Hello Neighborhood Leaders and Neighborhood Watch Members,
ADDRESSING ISSUES RELATED TO ILLEGAL FIREWORKS and QUALITY OF LIFE
To many, this past July 4th holiday was worse than in past years. In spite of efforts to inform, educate, enforce and remind us that all fireworks are illegal and dangerous, the number of calls and injuries due to illegal fireworks use has increased each year according to statistics from LAPD.
And the problem has grown to the point that public outcry has resulted in a demand that closer scrutiny be done by all agencies responsible for public safety especially during the July 4th holiday.
Since April, 2018, the LA City Council has held meetings and conducted hearings to address these issues with an eye toward improving LAPD service response and strengthening the anti-fireworks laws regarding illegal fireworks use, empowering LAPD, increasing fines/penalties and encouraging greater participation/reporting from community residents. Both LAPD and LAFD (MySafe:LA) have been directed to implement better community strategies and outreach to reduce incidents of public safety danger as a result of illegal fireworks.
Make plans to attend the Lake Balboa Neighborhood Council Health & Public Safety Committee meeting on Saturday, August 18th which will focus on this and other public safety issues facing our community. Join in and meet representatives from the local Council District office of Nury Martinez, West Valley LAPD, and LAFD Battalion 10 Chief. Learn what actions our LA City Council Public Safety Committee is doing to help address these challenges. Learn what our Community can do to help reduce the illegal fireworks threat to public safety.
