LAFD created the Community Emergency Response Team program in 1986. Since then, the program has gone national and even international.
Currently LAFD trains approximately 2,000 community members every year to be better prepared to take care of themselves, their families,
and to safely help out their neighbors after a disaster or major emergency.
To encourage and promote additional and continued training,
and to help people learn additional skills, LAFD CERT developed the level system:
Level 1 is the basic 17-1/2 hr CERT training that the Los Angeles Fire Department
offers for free.
Level 2 is in partnership with the American Red Cross:
- Disaster Services Overview tells you what the principal mission of the American Red Cross is
- Shelter Fundamentals (combines “overview” and “simulation”)
goes over the basic steps for setting up a Shelter Operation - First-Aid with Adult and Infant CPR/AED
gives you the basic skills to help save a life
Level 3 adds Advanced Emergency Medical Training
- Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder or equivalent
(EMT, paramedic, etc.)
Battalion 2 has reached out to the American Red Cross and arranged for their instructors to teach the Disaster Services Overview and Shelter Fundamentals classes
for free. We’ve also contacted several experienced and well-respected First-Aid
and CPR/AED instructors and are offering the class to you at cost.
Join us at the LAFD’s Frank Hotchkin’s Memorial Training Center next to Dodger Stadium on Saturday, March 18th for our CERT Level 2 in a Day:
