Demolition of Sixth Street Viaduct Over Freeway Friday, February 5, 2016 at 10:00 p.m. and ending on Sunday, February 7, 2016 at 2:00 p.m.Viaduct will close to traffic by end of January |
A traffic advisory has been issued by LAPD ahead of a planned 40-hour closure of the 101 Freeway near downtown Los Angeles that was scheduled to go into effect Friday night.
Authorities were closing the stretch of freeway east of downtown because of the impending demolition of the Sixth Street Viaduct over the L.A. River.
The roadway closure — which starts Feb. 5 at 10 p.m. and is scheduled to last until Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. — was necessary due to safety concerns, according to a construction update posted on the project’s website.
During that time, the 101 will be closed from the 10 Freeway near Union Station to the 5 Freeway interchange south of downtown.
Additionally, several on-ramps will be closed during that time, according to the Los Angeles Police Department traffic advisory, which was released Thursday.
