About this Event

Our community’s risk from natural disasters is increasing, and Southern California is just waiting for the Big One (8+ magnitude earthquake) to hit, with shaking lasting for MINUTES and not mere seconds as with the 1994 Northridge earthquake. When homes, businesses, and our infrastructure is destroyed, societal functioning itself is in danger of collapsing. Dr. Jones will show us that through science and effective planning, we can better understand what the risk is and how to address it. We all have a role to play in making our communities much more resilient to these future disasters through the choices we make today and tomorrow.

Dr. Lucy Jones is the founder of the Dr. Lucy Jones Center for Science and Society, with a mission to foster the understanding and application of scientific information in the creation of more resilient communities. She is the author of The Big Ones (Doubleday, April 2018) and is also a Research Associate at the Seismological Laboratory of Caltech, a post she has held since 1984. Working with both the public and private sectors, Dr. Jones seeks to increase communities’ ability to adapt and be resilient to the dynamic changes of the world around them. The aim is to understand and communicate where the greatest vulnerabilities lie and what actions can be taken to reduce the risk that are the most cost-effective. With a Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Language and Literature from Brown University and a Ph.D. in Geophysics from MIT, Dr. Lucy Jones has been active in earthquake research for decades, furthering earthquake risk reduction through seismological research and integrated disaster scenarios.

Training:

Preparing for a large scale disaster can be a challenge. As with any challenge worth tackling, it is important to rely on solid answers to common questions that will lay the foundation to success: Where do I start to get prepared? How do I know what supplies I really need? Where do I store them? How often should I update the supplies? How much does it all cost? Is there a company that I can partner with before a disaster strikes? SOS Survival Products has been answering these questions since 1989. We are your preparedness partner before, during and after a disaster.

In an emergency situation, one of your most valuable assets will be your personal knowledge and training. Knowing how to act in an emergency can subtract vital lifesaving minutes from official emergency response times to ensure better outcomes for those in need. SOS Survival Products offers a variety of first aid and certified CPR classes locally in Van Nuys to help you become equipped to handle everything from cuts and burns to cardiac and breathing emergencies. Emergency planning and proper supplies are a critical component of survival. To get started on the basics, keep an eye out for our free emergency preparedness training classes, designed to offer you information and tips to prepare you for disasters including earthquakes and floods.
