--- MONTHLY COMMITTEE MEETINGS ---

1st Monday of every month at 6:30pm

We are pleased to advise that the North Hills West Neighborhood Council will be initiating a Monthly Committee Meeting at New Horizons every first Monday of the month. The meetings will begin at 6:30pm and will end at 9:00pm - All Committees that need to meet will do so in one evening, with a 5 minute break between Committees. We will begin on June 3rd and please note the following meeting schedule. Agendas will be sent out 72 hours in advance which will state which committees will be meeting that month.

Greetings Community Members:

At our Clean-Up Event held on Sunday, March 24, 2013, we had a smaller but nonetheless very enthusiastic crew. We met at 8:30 a.m. and started cleaning up Roscoe Boulevard by 9 a.m.

We started by setting out plenty of traffic safety cones to protect our crew. We also hung the NHWNC banner at the rear of our clean-up truck to alert the community of the work being done.

We were unable to make it completely to Gothic Avenue due to our shortage of equipment to haul the huge amount of trash and debris. However, we were able to clean up the worst section of Roscoe Blvd. that had overgrown dead tree branches rampant with wild vines. We also exposed about 4 feet of sidewalk that can now be navigated safely by pedestrians.

Our heartfelt thanks goes to Dan Gibson of Valley Sod Farm, located at 16405 Chase Street, for providing a dumpster for our use. Without the dumpster, we would have barely put a dent into the project.

In addition to the dumpster provided by Valley Sod Farm, we also filled six of our personal DPW trash containers plus approximately eight black plastic bags that were left at the curb for pick-up by the Bureau of Sanitation.

If not for the lack of dumpsters, significantly more work would have been accomplished at this location. We will have to find ways to acquire more dumpsters and determine their appropriate placement for future clean-ups.

After cleaning Roscoe Boulevard, we transitioned to Lassen Street just West of Hayvenhurst. We mowed and trimmed between the curb and sidewalk from Havenhurst to the Balboa Wash. Due to ongoing budget cuts, this area has not been cleaned for years. The overgrown weeds and thick ivy on block walls have been infested with rats, posing a danger to residents and stakeholders walking along this route. We are grateful to Steve T. for alerting us on the need to clean-up this area.

It has become evident that in addition to the need for more dumpsters, our clean-up efforts would be enhanced with good equipment such as a power hedge trimmer and a string trimmer. It would also help to be able to provide our volunteers with safety gear, such as gloves, eye/face protective gear and dust masks.

All in all, this has been a very worthwhile accomplishment.
